Typology Requirements of a Situation

This application requires determining the role of each Type Mode for a specific task using categories that range from Primary to Least important. Subsequent to this classification, an individual's or a team's Type Modes are overlaid and questions about what would "come naturally" and what would "stretch" are addressed. A simple yet powerful way to quickly determine how much each Type Mode is required by a situation or task. Works well with an individual or a group. Includes: Twelve 6 page Task & Typology Booklets, one set of twelve (12) 8½ x 11 inch laminated Type Mode Definition Cards. Each card provides a concise definition of each of the eight Type Modes. A Facilitator's Guide describing how to run activities, compile results, and process discussions is included.

Why Task & Typology in Conjunction
with the SL-TDI?
Personality inventories inform the individual about her or his personality functioning. Until now, Type inventories have had no systematic way to directly bridge the results of the inventory to life circumstances and make it possible for the individual to explore and understand her or his reactions to different circumstances. Instead of empowering the individual to take charge of building her or his own knowledge, expert descriptions and predictions have been substituted. At this time, there are a huge number of workbooks and texts filled with experts predicting how "people" with a particular personality configuration are likely to behave. From this abstraction about "people in general with a certain configuration of scores", the individual is expected both accept the expert's definition of her or him and ignore the many details that either remain unspecified or are not appropriate to the individual's case.

Task & Typology breaks through this limitation by having the person, the individual that completed the SL-TDI, identify and develop an assessment of a situation (or situations) important to her or him. This assessment involves deciding how much each of the eight Type Modes is called for-—if one is to deal with the situation effectively. Doing the assessment deepens understanding of Type concepts and further clarifies the meaning of SL-TDI results.

With the completed assessment in hand, the individual can assess the relative fit between her or his SL-TDI Type Mode Profile and the situation.
In short, the individual learns how to use Type concepts in everyday life. Dependency on the outside expert is diminished to nearly zero. Autonomy of the individual is promoted. Most importantly, Type concepts become everyday tools to enhance personal functioning and development.

Teaching Typology Experientially

The Big Mirror: An Interpretive Exercise

Focused on one individual who is seeking to deal with an at-present-unsettled situation, the Big Mirror provides a powerful way for the individual to understand the dynamics of how her or his Type Profile functions. The structured role-play requires a focal person plus eight participants and any number of observers. The role-play is designed to refine understanding of the eight Type Modes and the dynamics of the relationships between them. Includes 8 laminated 5" x 8" Type Mode definition cards and 8 pin-style Name Tags, each with the name of a specific Type Mode in large letters, 12 copies of A Glossary of Terms printed on a card stock, 12 laminated copies of Brief Definitions of the Type Modes and a Facilitator's Guide.
The 4-page Facilitator's Guide explains, step-by-step, how to set up and facilitate the role-play, including time estimates for each activity. The Facilitator's Guide also includes alternative designs to help you adapt the exercise to your purposes.
